Poe renews call for creation of transport safety board after Mindoro bus crash

Sen. Grace Poe said that the National Transportation Safety Board, which has been pending in the Senate since 2016, would serve as the “transportation safety ombudsman.” It would cover land, sea, air, including railways and pipeline systems.

MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Grace Poe once again underscored the need for the creation of a safety board that would probe transportation-related accidents, following the bus crash in Occidental Mindoro that killed at least 19 people.

“As we express our deepest sympathies to the family of the Mindoro bus crash victims, we are enraged with the loss of lives due to events that could have been prevented,” Poe said in a statement Wednesday.

Poe said that the National Transportation Safety Board, which has been pending in the Senate since 2016, would serve as the “transportation safety ombudsman.”

The NTSB would cover land, sea, air, including railways and pipeline systems.

“The missing link in these accident prevention measures is the NTSB. There is a jumble of transport agencies, but there is no 'go-to agency' that will be able to unravel and explain major transportation accidents,” Poe said.

The Senate chair on public services warned that accidents would keep on happening unless government officials piece the pattern together.

“This recent incident reminded us once again about how public transportation in the country can be so dangerous,” she said.

Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority showed that 10,012 people died in road crashes in 2015.
