Philippines raises security concerns with Malaysia

MANILA, Philippines — The government peace panel has discussed security concerns in its recent meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak in Putrajaya, Malaysia.

Presidential Peace Adviser Jesus Dureza said that the two countries were able to coincide their thoughts and interests as members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

"We were talking about possible further enhancement of our engagements on a bilateral level looking at the security concerns," Dureza said.

The Cabinet member added that trade and tourism promotion concerns come hand-in-hand with security challenges as the Philippines and Malaysia share common borders.

Razak also expressed his concern about the stability and security in the region following the kidnapping incidents committed by the Abu Sayyaf Group.

Members of the Abu Sayyaf Group had pledged allegiance to jihadist militant group ISIS, according to a Palace statement.

"Secretary Dureza assured Prime Minister Najib that the same iron hand will be activated to deal with borders," Presidential Communications Office Secretary Martin Andanar said.

Dureza also reported the successful launching of the implementation of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro in Malaysia.
