‘LGBT welcome in police force’

The Philippine Star

SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, Philippines – Members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community are welcome to submit online applications for the police force this month, the Central Luzon director of the National Police Commission (Napolcom) said here yesterday.

According to Napolcom regional director Rodolfo Grande Santos Jr., there is no policy against LGBT people in the recruitment for new Philippine National Police (PNP) officers.

“We have tried it in Nueva Ecija since five years ago and we have found that (LGBT community members) could be more efficient and talented than their colleagues,” Santos said.

“Sometimes, the only way you’d know they are with the LGBT (community) is when you see them with personal things like pink ‘Hello Kitty’ items, but that’s okay,” he noted.

Santos said the PNP entrance examination “is open to all Filipino citizens who meet the age, height and educational requirements” regardless of sexual orientation.

This is despite the need to cite the biological gender of the applicants in the application forms.

All regions nationwide have Napolcom-designated examination centers for the applicants and the application forms can be obtained online from July 18 to 22. Applicants can visit www.napolcom.gov.ph for more details.
