Homegrown Miss Universe titlists Pia Wurtzbach and Catriona Gray initiated efforts in helping frontliners and those in need during the COVID-19 pandemic.

2015 Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach personally donated 5,000 pieces of medical masks that were distributed to health workers in four hospitals and initiated an online fundraising campaign for additional 25,000 pieces of medical masks.

In an Instagram post, Pia said, “So it’s officially week 2 of quarantine... I’d like to first say thank you to all our frontliners who put their lives at risk to serve and care for all of us. Maraming maraming salamat po. We also know that the number of cases is still rising and that families are worried more and more about putting food on the table. Watching and hearing about it in the news every day, it can be overwhelming.”

“I’m very grateful that I am able to stay at home, but it got me wondering, what can I do to help? How do I make myself useful at this time? So I decided to just try something. I tried looking for suppliers myself, starting with medical masks. And I found a few. I placed an order of 5,000 masks to be donated to our frontliners and I received them the next day. It made me realize, kung gusto mo talaga, may paraan,” she said.

“And then I thought, what if I had more? What if we could give more? Kulang pa ito. And this is where I need your help, guys. With the help of my friends, I’ve started an online fundraising campaign to provide 25,000 medical masks to our frontliners in different hospitals around Metro Manila. I know this may not sound like a lot, but it’s a start.”

“So I am humbly asking for your help. Tulungan niyo po kami para matulungan pa po namin sila. If you can, please donate,” she said, adding that she will be giving updates on the progress of the fundraising drive.

2018 Miss Universe Catriona Gray, in partnership with Young Focus Philippines and other local NGOs, have raised $20,000 cash donations.

Said Catriona in her social media accounts, “Thank you so much to everyone who joined me in donating towards helping feed the families of Smokey Mountain, Manila! Currently we’ve distributed to 790 families and are in the process of feeding another 1,000 families this coming Friday! Because of your generosity, almost 2,000 Filipino families will not go hungry and be able to stay home to protect their families health as well as their own! But we don’t need to stop there! Let’s continue to reach more families in this time of need. One 15-kg. bag of rice costs only $11 or P550. Any little bit of kindness is very much appreciated! All bank and donation info can be found on www.youngfocus.org/rice.”
