Jose Mari Chan reacts to his trending memes

MANILA, Philippines — Veteran singer Jose Mari Chan shared his reaction to social media memes about him that have been dominating the Christmas airwaves as early as September. 

In an interview with Philstar.com during a recent Shopee event where he is the season endorser, Jose Mari said that he sees the memes as a compliment. 

“I haven’t seen all of them, but the few that I had seen I feel that it’s complimentary for me. I feel complimented. Of course, there are those that are a little bit negative, but I don’t mind. It’s social media, so everyone is entitled to his or her opinion,” the man behind the iconic song “Christmas In Our Hearts” said.  

As a Filipino singer who always enjoys the spotlight annually because of his Christmas hits, Jose Mari said that the attention he gets for his Christmas songs is a reward from God. 

“I consider that a blessing from God because I wrote a song that glorified him. I wrote a song that gives the real meaning of Christmas. I think this is a blessing and a reward for me,” he said.  

When asked what makes his Christmas songs always a hit, he said it is because of the messages that these songs bring. 

“First of all, the melody is hummable. It’s very easy to memorize, very easy to sing, very catchy. And most of all, it carries the message of Christmas. I doesn’t talk about Santa Claus, it doesn’t talk about sleigh bells on the snow; it talks about children selling lanterns on the street, it talks about people giving gifts and cards and having Christmas in our hearts. It is the sharing of a blessing, that’s very uniquely Filipino,” he said.  

Online shopping site Shopee tapped Jose Mari as its Christmas ambassador in line with the return of the site's 12.12 Big Christmas Sale on December 12.
