The spies that we love

Joy Jonette Chuyaco - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – Who doesn’t like spy films? They show the coolest cars, the newest gadgets, the perfect agents and the most daring missions possible. Once in a while, it would be nice to be in the shoes of these spies and save the day. But other times you would rather just watch them do the job and enjoy. So who’s your favorite spy? Here are some popular ones to choose from.

Agent Gracie Hart (Ms. Congeniality). The lady agent did surprise her workmates when she had a makeover to join the Ms. USA Beauty Pageant for a secret mission. She is truly a darling in many ways but not a joke to take. Her assignment didn’t end in the film because there was a sequel which required her to be on-the-job again. What a life!

Susan Cooper (Spy). All throughout her career, she works behind the desk but this time an opportunity arises that leads her into taking an assignment as a front man. Well, there may be some clumsiness and all but this woman is about to show the others that she has the skill and she is ready to take in more challenging missions. Way to go girl!

Ethan Hunt (Mission: Impossible). Even though his missions are mostly hard-to-believe, especially his stunts and all, viewers still think he is cool and a must-see. And when the theme song plays, that completes it all. It was a TV series during the late ’60s to early ’70s. Back then, it was already a hit; so when the movie version came out in 1996, fans were delighted to see it on the big screen.

Natalie, Dylan and Alex (Charlie’s Angels). These three ladies, who possess beauty, brains and strength, are a sure favorite of many women, probably of guys as well. They just know when to be at the right place, at the right time, doing the right thing. Their missions are no joke but they seem to enjoy it all. They love the adventure, the challenge and the action. Now these are real spicy spies.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith. While being a spy may be cool, a couple who are both spies and working for different organizations may be not. Looks like this couple is having the most difficult task of their lives. Why? That is because they both need to kill two people: Each other, that is.

Bob Ho (The Spy Next Door). Trying to finally live a normal life, former CIA agent Bob Ho lives with his girlfriend and her kids. As he tries to be the good stepfather, trouble comes right at him. An enemy from the past has come back, and Bob needs to, once again, deal with it.

Austin Powers (from Austin Powers film series). It’s an “all-spies in one” comedy-action film, which centers on the main character Austin Powers and his enemy Dr. Evil. It does have its story but it is mostly a spoof of other famous spy films like those of James Bond. Well, sometimes we can’t be too serious.

Jason Bourne (from The Bourne film series). CIA assassin Jason Bourne wakes up one day not remembering anything, including his own identity. The situation gets even more complicated when he realizes that he is being hunted down. For what reason? He can’t remember. He needs to find out and he needs to survive.

Harry Tasker (True Lies). To everybody, his life seems to be a boring one; in reality, his life is full of action and adventures. An “I-need-to-do-overtime-work” excuse is actually a mission that could happen anywhere around the world. How about a spy, like Harry, for a husband? Ask his clueless wife, Helen, about it.

James Bond. Of course, it would be a sin not to include Mr. Bond (a.k.a Agent 007) here. Who doesn’t know him? He is a model spy — he has the high-end cars, the up-to-date gadgets, the hottest girls, the designer suits and the top-secret assignments. For more than 50 years now, Mr. Bond still has it. Viewers just can’t have enough of him. Next Bond film, please!
