25 Filipino and Tsinoy exemplars in focus

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - In the Fourth Tsinoy National Convention on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, youth and community leaders will redefine leadership as they interact with 25 exemplars from our society.

Topping the list is Prof. Solita “Mareng Winnie” Collas-Monsod who will deliver the keynote address. She will highlight the values of oneness, acceptance and mutual respect and promote an appreciation of our multicultural heritages.

Other multi-awarded exemplars are Queena Lee-Chua (education), Dr. Isidro Sia (medicine), Kenneth Cobonpue (arts and design) and Josiah Go (marketing).

Innovative leaders from 15 Tsinoy-run programs will share their experiences in implementing development work on heritage, education, health, community development and governance. These programs have been selected for their creative concepts, niche markets, excellent practices or working models.

Some of the programs are: Akay-DLSU for its public school-based tutorial program with home visits and action research; Project Laan-AdMU for public health insurance; Good Food Community for community-shared agriculture; and the TayTsinoy Festival for cultural celebration in the local government of Tayabas, Quezon.

Five technical experts will pose challenges to the participants for pro-action on the five development themes. One such technical expert in the field of education is Mark N.A. Maca who finished his graduate studies at the Institute of Education-University of London in 2009. He is now Deputy Director of the Indigenous Peoples and Muslim Education program of the Department of Education.

The concept of community and its different aspects will be part of the reflective, creative workshop during the convention.

The Fourth Tsinoy National Convention seeks to inspire 300 youth and community leaders to take pride in their multicultural heritage, to advocate for oneness and mutual respect, and to engage in social development. All of these are creative responses of leadership to the call of the times.

The convention will take place at the Kaisa Heritage Center, Anda cor. Cabildo Sts., Intramuros, Manila. It is organized by Kaisa Para Sa Kaunlaran Inc., a non-government organization composed of Chinese Filipinos.
