Solar panels for Calayan islands

MANILA, Philippines - Standard Insurance Co. Inc., led by its chairman Ernesto Echauz (left), visited Brgy. Dilam, Calayan Island, which is part of the Babuyan Islands, to distribute solar panels, school materials and kindle readers. The barangay has no electricity but it is home to a public elementary school with 80 pupils and a high school with a population of 200 students. Echauz and retired banker Noel Canivel (right) turned over the kindle paperwhites, custom designed solar panel charges and batteries to high school teacher Roy Castillejos (center). The kindles are loaded with encyclopaedias and many special interest books for the high school students and teachers.
