2 types of corn hybrids recommended for M’danao

Two types of corn hybrids have been recommended for Western Mindanao (Region 9).

These are the single-cross (SC) hybrids and the three-way-cross (TWC).

The TC hybrid is a cross between the inbred (traditional) lines while the TWC is a cross between a single-cross and an inbred line.

"Depending on farmers’ choice, these hybrids are recommended in support of the Ginintuang Masaganang Ani (GMA)-Corn Production Program in the corn-cluster areas of Region 9," said the DA-Western Mindanao Integrated Agricultural Research Center (WESMIARC) based in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Sources of the technology are WESMIARC researchers F.M. Salomes, S.M. Simbajon, C.A. Acosta, and R.N. Ocay.

"Both single-cross and three-way-cross hybrids are genetically superior in terms of yield performance over the existing improved and traditional corn varieties which are genetically low-yielders," the researchers reported.

They noted that during the wet season, the yield of the single-cross hybrids increases to 8.56 tons per hectare from 7.18 t/ha. During the dry season, the yield can go up to 7.83 t/ha from 6.67 t/ha.

Yield of the three-day-cross hybrids increases from 6.72 t/ha to 7.62 t/ha in the wet season and from 7.50 t/ha in the dry season.

Single cross hybrids give a net income of P46,750 to P57,175 in the wet season and P48,100 to P49,300 in the dry season.

Using the TWC hybrids, the net income varies from P27,740 to P50,450 in the wet season and from P28,860 to P50,250 in the dry season.

The single-cross, wet season hybrids are NK-8840 and NK-5468 bred by Syngenta while the single-cross dry season hybrids are NK-5447 (Syngenta) and DK-868 (Monsanto).

The three-way-cross wet season hybrids are DK-8652 (Monsanto), DK-9051 (Monsanto), GSI-35 (TSG-81) (Asian Hybrid), and P30W30 (Pioneer).

The TWC dry season hybrids are DK-9051 (Monsanto), GSI-35 (TSG-81) (Asian Hybrid), P-30B29 @ (Pioneer), and P-30W30 @ (Pioneer). – RAF
