NMIS turns over hog slaughterhouse in Iloilo

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The National Meat Inspection Service has turned over to the municipality of Barotac Nuevo in Iloilo province a P10-million community slaughterhouse for hogs that was constructed through a grant.

The slaughterhouse situated in Brgy. Tabuc Suba will also service the neighboring municipalities of Anilao, Banate, Dumangas and Pototan.

The abattoir was completed in June last year and was turned over to the local government of Barotac on Jan. 30.

The construction of the slaughterhouse was funded in 2013 through the National Abattoir Development Project of the National Livestock Program.

The abattoir program, implemented by the NMIS, provides full grant to local government units that comprises strategic livestock production areas but have no financial capacity to provide slaughterhouses for their constituents.

The new slaughterhouse in Barotac Nuevo has a processing capacity of a maximum of 25,920 heads of hog annually as well as a maximum of 12,960 heads of large animals annually in a 12-hour daily operation.

Since September last year, the NMIS has been providing trainings to the beneficiaries of the community slaughterhouse.

The operators were provided technical knowledge and support in good manufacturing practices, proper animal slaughtering procedure and operation of equipment.

The Department of Agriculture has been promoting the construction of more slaughterhouses that are fit for producing meat cuts for both local consumption and export.

This is meant to ensure sufficiency in domestic supply of meat and prevent price spikes.
