AFP, BFP zero in on UNTV q’ finals

MANILA, Philippines - Defending champion Armed Forces of the Philippines and Bureau of Fire Protection came away with a pair of imposing triumphs to stay in the quarterfinal race in the fifth UNTV Cup at the Pasig City Sports Center last weekend.

Exploiting the absence of former PBA MVP Kenneth Duremdes, the BFP Firefighters used a strong start to stun the erstwhile unbeaten Bureau of Customs Transformers, 95-89, and keep their quarter hopes alive.

Gilbert Malabanan shot 21 points, including clutch baskets that helped scuttle Customs’ comeback and notch their fifth win in nine games.

The AFP Cavaliers likewise improved to a 5-4 record, snapping the Judiciary Magi’s six-game run with an 80-72 victory.
