The Bold and the Beautiful

MJ Benitez - The Philippine Star

Mane Gala

MANILA, Philippines - Go big or go home. While most attendees opted for space-saving topknots this year (we’re looking at you, Kate Hudson, Hailey Baldwin, Hailee Steinfeld and Priyanka Chopra), Zendaya amped up the volume by wearing a billowing parrot-print Dolce & Gabbana ball gown with an equally larger-than-life ‘fro. Paired with bright tangerine puckers and a sweep of gold shadow along the lashes, the young singer certainly knows how to create a standout beauty moment.

Crimson Kiss

In 1988, the color red dominated Comme des Garçons’ fall collection. Why? “Red is black,” Kawakubo explained simply. And though the Met Gala’s red carpet looks left us sorely disappointed (why did it feel more high-fashion prom than a Comme homage?), the beauty front at least showed a lot of red… on the lips, that is. From Kendall Jenner’s striking red-orange shade (a limited-edition lippie she created with Estée Lauder called Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick in Carnal) and Rita Ora’s matte crimson puckers to Katy Perry’s glossy ruby lips (visible even under a vermilion Maison Margiela by John Galliano veil), we can always count on the classic red to create a beauty statement.

Everything is Illuminated

No hair, no problem. Cara Delevingne, who shaved off her hair for the upcoming drama Life in a Year, culled beauty inspiration from past Comme des Garçons presentations (i.e. spring 2002’s newsprint papier-mâché caps and fall 1993’s sculpted tinfoil headpieces) to come up with a super-spiffy futuristic ‘do that matches her bedazzled Chanel suit — a silver-painted scalp (complete with faux bangs!) adorned with metallic sequins. What can we say? We’re #scalped.

Lash Out

Welcome to the dark side: a sharp noir bob with blunt baby bangs — an obvious nod to Kawakubo’s trademark cut — worn by Lily Collins on the red carpet certainly caught our attention but it’s the spidery lashes and deep burgundy pout combination that had us doing a double take. Set against her porcelain complexion and worn with a corseted Giambattista Valli gown (swathed in frothy pink tulle), the result is equal parts vampiric and romantic. How’s that for some extra beauty bite?

Heavy Metal

As if we weren’t wowed enough by Rihanna’s Met Gala ensemble — an architectural floral Comme des Garçons piece from the fall 2016 runway paired with thigh-high lace-ups that took an hour to wear (totally worth it, by the way) — the singer also pulled out all the stops with her beauty choices, God bless her. Observe: pink eyeshadow is brushed from all over the lids and along the temples to the cheekbones, with ample amounts of highlighter giving her an ultra glow-up. A black feline flick and oxblood lips complete the look.
