Sangria, art and Souks on a Sunday

TALK SHOP - Anne Bella - The Philippine Star

With summer in full off-the-charts temperature swing, it’s only apt to chill the way only city folks can: with a nice pitcher of Sangria, a scrumptious Mediterranean buffet in a space that’s akin to a corner in an exotic beach resort somewhere, preferably with a belly dancer.

Such was the atmosphere last April 21 at Kasbah, The Fort as they launched their Sunday Sunset Sessions hosted by model Nadine Lima (who coincidentally is from Gibraltar, a British territory that’s close to Morocco). Guests were treated to an amazing spread of Middle-Eastern and Mediterranean eats plus unlimited sangria, courtesy of the owner Madonna English’s own recipes. “We wanted to create a new dining experience that showcased new dishes that will change weekly. I love to cook myself and this is an extension of my passion,” says the co-owner. Husband Martin takes care of managing the place and is known for his keen attention to detail. The night’s highlight was their own version of the Spanish paella called Kosheri, a lentil and rice dish accompanied by a spicy tomato sauce that is a staple in Egypt. This event was actually the brainchild of Nadine, who felt there weren’t a lot of Happy Hour options on Sundays. She suggested the idea to Madonna and Sunset Sessions was the result.

Two of the best DJs in town, Abdel Aziz and Mark Zero (a.k.a. El Ministro) provided the groovy ambient sounds while artist Dee Jae Pa’Este of Manila Pop-up created an awesome mural from scratch and showcased his designs under his label Mister Clothing. A mini Souk was also set up selling bags, shoes and accessories from retailer Flipped out Cockatoos.

Oh, and did I mention the belly dancer?

Kasbah’s Sunset Sessions happens every Sunday from 6 to 10 p.m.
