Wear your school pride

- Liane D. Reyes -

MANILA, Philippines - What do you get when you mix school pride, street style and a genuine desire to help those in need? Three words: awesome fashion collaboration.

Local retail brand Team Manila teamed up with the UP Industrial Engineering Club (UP IE Club) to create UP Aking Mahal. With its tagline: a tribute to a song that must be sung, the line aims to promote UP pride and inspire the university’s students and alumni to succeed in their chosen professions. The shirts and lanyard contain graphic art interpretations of iconic UP landmarks like the Oblation, Ikot and Toki jeepneys, the Carillion, the Sunken Garden grandstand and isaw — the university’s famed street food.

The line was born through the creative direction of UP IE Club members Melissa Tan, Grace Tan and Caloy Torrijos. As Melissa puts it, “I think it’s about time that UP students and alumni took ownership of what the song means. Like the tagline says, this campaign is a tribute to a school that could use some spirit and a song that must be sung.”

But the line takes school spirit one step further. Proceeds from the collaboration are slated to go to the organization’s scholarship fund. Started in 2008, the UP IE Club Scholarship Fund helps less fortunate students achieve their dream of pursuing an education in the UP College of Engineering.
