DPWH to install 3,000 trash traps in Metro Manila

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Public Works and Highways would install at least 3,000 trash traps in Metro Manila as part of efforts to prevent flooding in the metropolis, the DPWH announced yesterday.
According to the DPWH, the trash traps would be installed in 78 waterways in Metro Manila in collaboration with local government units (LGUs) and agencies such as the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority.
DPWH Secretary Giovanni Lopez said the initiative is part of the government’s Oplan Kontra Baha program, which is aimed at identifying the sources of trash that clog waterways and prevent the accumulation of debris that worsens flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas in the National Capital Region.
Lopez said the program follows the directive of President Marcos to intensify and sustain measures under Oplan Kontra Baha in preparation for the rainy season.
He added that the DPWH would partner with LGUs to ensure accountability in irresponsible waste disposal in communities.
“This effort seeks to prevent a recurrence of the massive trash accumulation that caused severe flooding in Parañaque in August,” the DPWH said.
