Trying to break the ice

AUCKLAND – Are the debuting Filipinas due for a historic goal and victory in this FIFA Women’s World Cup?

Striker Sarina Bolden firmly believes so.

She draws confidence from the Filipinas’ generally impressive showing in a 0-2 losing game to Switzerland, where Katrina Guillou had a close-but-not-quite strike 15 minutes in. Guillou was ruled offside when she made her way to the Swiss net.

“It was pure jubilation (when Guillou’s shot went in) but short-lived. We all saw it, wishing it was on (side). But just getting a taste of what it might feel like when we do score our first goal, I think next time, we’ll be even more hungry to get it. So hoping to get that,” said Bolden.

For the Fil-Am who plays for A-League Women club Western Sydney Wanderers, that breakthrough is possible in tomorrow’s game against host New Zealand; if not, in the duel with Norway on July 30.

“It (scoring celebration) was short-lived but I really think we can do it, we can get our first goal in our debutant appearance. I think we can get our first win as well here,” she said.

“It just going to take a lot of hard work, grit, determination, trust, just a lot of different things it will require from us but we’ve been working on this for well over a year and half now. I know we can get the result.”
