Royals defeat Mavericks in IPTL’s Dubai opener

MANILA, Philippines – Host team Musafir.com UAE Royals treated the home crowd with a thrilling victory over the Manila Mavericks in the first day of matches in the Dubai leg of the International Premier Tennis League.
Although ATP World No. 1 Novak Djokovic dropped his match against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 5-6, in his first match for the Royals at home turf, his teammates rallied to outlast the gritty Mavericks on Thursday.
The Royals took the first set as Caroline Wozniacki beat Kirsten Flipkens, 6-2.
Mark Philippoussis got the Mavericks back into the match, trouncing Goran Ivanesevic, 6-5.
In the mixed doubles set, Flipkens partnered with Daniel Nestor to defeat Nenad Zimonjic and Kristina Mladenovic 6-4.
Zimonjic with Marin Cilic recovered to give to take the fifth set for the Royals, getting the better of Nestor and Tsonga, 6-5.
