Tambunting repeats as Class A champ in Southwoods monthly

-
Joseph Tambunting led an explosive assault of the Masters and Legends courses defanged by the absence of winds to shoot a net three-under-par 69 and win Class A for the second straight time in the members monthly tournament for February of the Manila Southwoods Golf and Country Club course.

Tambunting’s gross of 73 at the Masters also proved to be the low gross as he duplicated his big win last month with a one-stroke win over Larry Tojino and Joseph Hodreal.

All seven division winners ended up in the red numbers with Roberto Agojo, the Class C champion, checking in with the best net of the day. The uncle of jungolf sensation Jayvie fired a tournamet-low net 62 to beat Mario Badillo and Bobby Asis by four.

Joining Tambunting and Agojo in the roster of winners were Jed Rosero in Class B, Rudy Gorka in Class D and Antonio Go in Class E. Lanfen Hsieh topped ladies Group II in runaway fashion while Celones scored her first victory by ruling Group II.

Sponsored by Mitsubishi Motors, Diamond Motors, Northwest Airlines, Royal Carribean International, Thai Airways, Samsung and Wilson Sports, the tourney drew a field of 281 members.

Ed Lacson, meanwhile, bagged the biggest prize in the raffle — a 29-inch Samsung Flat TV.

The top finishers all won Samsung appliances with the champion getting a 17-inch TV, the runner-up DVD player and the third placer a microwave oven.

The club is now preparing for the March tournament on the 14th of this month and the Manila Southwoods Invitational member-guest which will be played on April 1-4.

Rosero figured in a three-way tie for first with Moroo Shino and Manny Santander — all having similar 66s — but prevailed in the countback. Go was another winner via a tiebreak after Dante Santos matched his score of 63.

Gorka handily won his division with a 64, placing four strokes ahead of Rolly Aguilar and Wellington Kho. Hsieh beat Yvette Ilagan by eight strokes and Celones won by two over Luisa Sison.

Nobody won the Mitsubishi car which was staked as a hole-in-one prize.
