Promote culture of gratitude for teachers, LGUs urged

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) is urging governors and mayors to take the lead in promoting a culture of gratitude for teachers by organizing programs to honor them in their respective communities as part of the observance of National Teachers’ Month from Sept. 5 to Oct. 5.

Interior Undersecretary Austere Panadero said local government units (LGUs) may do so through special presentations and messages from students and other concerned groups.

Panadero said LGUs may also encourage commercial and retail outlets in their areas to offer discounts/freebies or special promos for teachers, or come up with special “Thank you, Teacher” merchandise during the month.

“‘Salamat, Ma’am at Sir’ should be the resounding message of the nation during the month-long celebration,” he said.

“Teachers cultivate knowledge and inspire their students to think creatively. They plant the seeds of innovation and change, the key ingredients for our nation to continue to move forward and soar high,” Panadero said.

“With their great contribution, they could be no less than heroes for helping build our nation,” he added.

The annual National Teachers’ Month and National Teachers’ Day on Oct. 5 are observed pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 242 and Republic Act 10743, respectively, making the Philippines the holder of the longest period of festivities for teachers.

The nationwide “National Prayer for Teachers” and “Ringing of Bells” at exactly 10:05 am on Oct. 5 will highlight this year’s celebrations.
