11 Makati facilities powered by renewable energy

MANILA, Philippines — The Makati City Hall and 10 other local government facilities are now 100 percent powered by renewable energy.
Among those running completely on clean energy are the University of Makati, Makati Coliseum, Ospital ng Makati, Makati City Hall Building 2, Old City Hall Building and three public schools.
These facilities consume a total of 5.76 megawatts of power, based on their average monthly peak demand.
Makati aims to use renewable energy for its 154 properties, enabling the city government to save up to P300 million in electricity costs.
To make this possible, Makati inked a nine-year renewable energy supply agreement with Ayala’s ACEN Corp. on March 19.
The city government has also launched a public dashboard, which tracks the power consumption of these facilities and the carbon emissions prevented.
Energy Regulatory Commission Chairman Francis Saturnino Juan said other local government units should take the cue from Makati.
“It aggregated all its facilities, and then partnered with ACEN, which was able to come up with a proposal that will actually offer a discount times amount versus the captive customer’s generation rate,” Juan said during the switching ceremony at the city hall on Wednesday night.
Department of Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said Makati’s initiative is proof that the DOE policies, hard as they may be to understand, are working.
