MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Budget and Management has released P1.1 billion to conserve and restore heritage school buildings in the country.

Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman approved the special allotment release order amounting to P1.134 billion to the Department of Education (DepEd).

The amount will finance the conservation and restoration of Gabaldon school buildings, which were built from the early 1900s to late 1940s, and other heritage school buildings.

Gabaldon school buildings were constructed during the colonial period of the United States and drew inspiration from the traditional bahay kubo and stone house designs.

The National Heritage Act declared all Gabaldons as important cultural properties that need to be protected and conserved.

Local government units were directed to adopt measures to safeguard these buildings as part of the country’s cultural conservation efforts.

There are 2,045 Gabaldon school buildings in the country.

The DBM said the P1.1-billion allocation would benefit 654 classrooms in 83 areas nationwide.
