MANILA, Philippines — West zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services Inc. has spent P208 million to replace nearly one kilometer of “old and leaky” primary lines in Manila, recovering three million liters per day (MLD) of potable water.

Maynilad said it recently completed its pipe replacement project in Sampaloc, Manila, providing higher water pressure and reducing water losses in the area.

The project, Maynila said, involved the replacement of pipes along Maria Clara and Quiricada streets that had varying diameter sizes ranging from 600 to 750 millimeters.

With the pipe replacement, the water pressure in six Sampaloc barangays increased to 16 pounds per square inch from seven psi.

The increased water pressure will benefit more than 40,200 residents, allowing water supply to reach up to the third story of a structure without the need for a booster pump, Maynilad added.

Maynilad said it would also recover about three MLD of potable water, which can meet the requirements of over 21,000 customers, that were previously lost because of pipe leaks.

“The water we were able to recover from this project adds to the available supply that we distribute to our customers, thus helping to augment water supply this El Niño season,” Maynilad president and chief executive officer Ramoncito Fernandez said.
