All set for Carmona cityhood plebiscite

Mayen Jaymalin - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is urging residents of Carmona, Cavite to participate in the plebiscite to be held tomorrow to ratify the conversion of the town into a component city.

Comelec Chairman George Garcia said registered voters should make known their preference, noting that “their voices, not ours, matter.”

Garcia said preparations for the conduct of the plebiscite have been completed.

Election paraphernalia and supplies from the Comelec warehouse in Cabuyao, Laguna will be brought to Carmona early tomorrow.

There are 58,691 registered voters in 14 barangays in Carmona.

The plebiscite will be held in 10 voting centers with 116 clustered precincts from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

President Marcos signed on Feb. 23 Republic Act No. 11938,  which converts Carmona into a component city.

To be known as the City of Carmona, it will remain under the jurisdiction of Cavite and the fifth legislative district of the province.

Under the law, the City of Carmona ”shall acquire corporate existence upon the ratification of its creation by a majority of the votes cast by the qualified voters in a plebiscite.”

The plebiscite period, which started on June 8 is until July 15.

Aside from a gun ban, transfer of civil service officers or employees, suspension of local elective officials and illegal release of prisoners are prohibited during the election period.

The ratification of Carmona’s cityhood will bring to eight the number of cities in Cavite.

The other seven are Cavite City, Trece Martires, Tagaytay, Dasmariñas, Bacoor, Imus and General Trias.
