PCG: No illegal items in Chinese fishing boat

TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines — There were no illegal items found on the boat of Chinese fishermen rescued by Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) personnel off the coast of Suluan Island in Guiuan, Eastern Samar last week.

Personnel of the Bureau of Immigration, Bureau of Customs and PCG checked the FV Kai DA 899 for firearms, explosives, illegal drugs, illegal fishing items and other contraband, PCG-Leyte station commander Ramil Montenar said.

He said they only found personal items, food, water and fuel.

Montenar said the Chinese fishermen were able to present documents validating their status as fishermen.

The PCG had earlier said initial investigation showed the Chinese had no intention of fishing in Philippine waters.

Montenar said authorities confirmed the cause of the boat’s steering issues when it sent out a distress signal. It was also verified that that there was no oil spill or hole on the boat, he added.

The PCG office in Leyte gave assurance that it would provide security and help in the other needs of the Chinese fishermen while they remain in the country.

The PCG’s BRP Cabra was deployed to rescue the crewmembers of the Chinese fishing vessel on Friday after the Tacloban sub-station received a distress call.

The crew told rescuers they were drifting at sea for five days after the vessel encountered a mechanical problem.
