Subic firm denies retrenching workers due to COVID

The Philippine Star

SUBIC, Philippines — Subic Bay International Terminal Corp., a subsidiary of the International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) has denied reports that it retrenched 121 workers due to the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

“We have not let go of any employees throughout the recent crisis nor do we plan to let anyone go due to a business loss in the near future as it relates to this health crisis,” Roberto Locsin, chief executive officer of Philippine Growth Terminals-ICTSI, yesterday said.

“Our priority since day one of the lockdown was to take care of our employees... both financially and medically.  We have provided continuous remittance of salaries, benefits and incentives throughout this time,” Locsin said.

Some 3,500 workers will be affected by a retrenchment program to be implemented by 20 companies at the freeport, according to the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority.
