Ystyle picks: Paris Fashion Week s/s 2019 beauty
Think pink
I don’t know about you, but I’m in the mood for a break from the red lip as a statement and a classic. Nothing says s/s 2019 more than a bright, vivid fuchsia lip at Chanel. In Koché, it was a dab of coral on blurred crimson. Maison Margiela and Chloé traded scarlet for Bordeaux. And in what was the beauty look of the entire season, the lips at McGrath’s Valentino were not only coated in a rich magenta; leave it to a layer of sparkling Swarovski crystals to turn up the wattage.
Bang[s] to the future
Choppy bobs at Junya Watanabe electrified the collection with a neon dye job. At Givenchy, Guido Palau models with existing pixies got trimmed, razored and tousled, while at Miu Miu, it was neater close-crops and bobs. At Saint Laurent, there’s nothing juvenile about a bowl-cut — with an eye-grazing fringe, it suddenly looks sultry. In Dries Van Noten, it was all about micro-bangs, whether with hair or feather headpieces.
Plaits please
Pretty plaiting takes a turn for the sublime. Deconstructed low knots with a micro-braid accent were a contrasting, girlish accent by Paul Hanlon. added to all that heavy chainmail at Paco Rabanne. At Thom Browne, it was lopsided, gravity-defying rolled twists. It was scene-stealing basket-weave braids at Atlein. At Alexander McQueen, Guido Palau wove manes into taut, slick, twin low braids with sculpted wisps.
Painterly strokes
The eyes glimmer with gilt in Valentino — Pat McGrath bejeweled gem-toned, winged eyes with Swarovski crystal. Tom Pecheux painted strokes of marigold, tangerine, crimson and azure on models’ sunset-inspired lids at Esteban Cortazar. At Off-White, neon splotches appeared sportif on models’ ears. Ye old standby black eyeliner continues to go strong but the application calls for childlike abandon. It was in one straight line at Dries van Noten. At Dior, Peter Philips referenced show choreographer Sharon Eyal’s signature tattoo etchings with scribbles of black eyeliner.
Hair accessories as the new ‘it’ bag
Alessandra Rich’s heiresses were prim and proper with decadent crystal hair slides on side-parts and velvet head bands. It’s kitschy at Miu Miu with beaded headbands adorned with a dainty bow while Chanel went for easy-breezy with half ponytails fastened with a diamanté double-C hair ornaments, both by Sam Mcknight. For the hotly anticipated Celine debut, netted fascinators were reimagined into a band. Olivier Theyskens’ twisted buns were secured by ribbons and adorned with twigs.
