Run away with me

Maine Manalansan - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - There’s something about working out alone that’s relaxing. You get your personal space and you don’t have someone to scream at your face when you can no longer lift yourself while doing lunges. But when the going gets tough (read as: the repetitions get harder), it’s better to work out with a buddy. Surely, someone to share your “suffering” is always nice and you even get to have a brunch buddy after.

This kind of buddy system is especially helpful in Robinsons Supermarket’s 9th Fit & Fun Buddy Run. Bonifacio Global City will transform into a playground for runners this Sunday in one of the biggest and longest running racing events in the country. What’s great about it is participants can bring a friend to run through the 5k or 10k courses. As a treat, prizes await at the finish line for finishers.

We caught up with Southeast Asian Games gold medalist and Robinson’s Supermarket Wellness ambassador Nikko Huelgas about his love for running and his favourite post-workout meal. Buddies, take notes.

Young STAR: How did you get started with running?

Nikko: I got started with running when I was 11 years old. I would do 1km run every day after school because I had a lot of free time when I’m at home. Entering college, I just joined a school fun run in 2008 because of peer pressure but I enjoyed it and did more.

What do you love most about it?

I love the feeling of doing cardio and getting my mind relaxed. It’s my way to unwind.

What or who is the best running companion?

My best running companion is my music player and mostly my national teammates. They push me all the time to do my best.

I noticed in your Instagram has a lot of photos of delicious food. What’s your go-to post-marathon meal?

Oh yes, I love food! My go-to post marathon meal is always protein for quick and proper recovery with banana and orange. After that, my running buddies and I go to a tapsilog place or a quiet cozy breakfast place.
