FROM COFFEE TO COCKTAILS - Celine Lopez -
Filipinas sometimes seem to have an identity crisis on how they are supposed to look. With babes gleaming with an alabaster pallor, green eyes, and French fry pouts lording over billboards and glossies all over the country, its easy to see why these femme fatales can be fatal. All over the world, whether they be Ivy Leagued CEO’s or washed-up army vets (both potentially sleazy, yes, but try to get my drift) will vow that Filipino women are the most beautiful in the world.

After all we have an exotic mix of European, Chinese and Malay characteristics. From skin tones ranging from soft yellowish cream to deep roasted macadamia, the Filipina beauty does not have one face, but has facets of worldly pulchritude. Photographer Victor Consunji notes that,’"More and more I find the Filipina beauty to be able to hold its own with beauties of other nations, modern women elevating our awareness, confidence, and sense of style and beauty. The Filipina epitomizes some of the greatest traits a women should have."

Maybelline, that all-American brand is now going global as it reintroduces its friendly wands and potions to the Filipina. Celine Gabriel of Maybelline approached makeup maven Denise Go and I to create looks for the young Filipina reinterpreting the Maybelline New York spirit for Manila and photographer Victor Consunji to capture it.

If there was something that was more American than apple pie then it would be blue eye shadow. Never mind its bad reputation, blue, despite its trailer trash image, is a versatile and elegant color when used and manipulated in a proper fashion. Using this atrocity from decades ago and applying it to the more exotic Filipino context was a challenge, and later a triumph. After all, if batwings and high cut sneakers are hotter than ever, then nothing should keep the hardy blue shadow in Pandora’s box. Thus the concept of the Modern Blues was born. If denims are a staple in the closet, why shouldn’t blue eye color be a staple at the boudoir?

Denise Go says, "Blue is a very interesting and fun color, but a lot of women are scared to use it because most of them think its too bright and might look unnatural. What they don’t know is if it is used the right way, and at the right time, it can compliment various looks on Asians, especially Filipinas. Here we show how blue eyeshadow could be used to come up with three different looks or characters."

Using three diverse Filipina beauties who each bear the distinct Filipina charm, Denise and I tried to create looks that are pertinent to today’s on-the-go modern femme (no man-eaters here!). Modern City Slick is a clean and sharp look that uses a bold azure streak to accentuate the eyes and learning all else bare and natural. The Modern Rebel is a more seductive look which smokes out eyes with a deep blue creating a mood of mystery and adventure. The Modern Romantic is a soft halo of blue patted on the lid giving off an ethereal yet endearing look.

Blue as basic as a color as it may seem, is actually a compelling paradox as Victor shares, "When someone mentions the idea of blue, it reminds me of flame and coolness at the same time. Hot and confident, sexy but not loud, presence yet mysterious, much like a sapphire with its quiet and graceful radiance."
