Saving the world before bedtime

- Kathy Moran -
Don’t worry Mayor,’ we’re coming!" the Powerpuff Girls may all have chimed in after hearing the news: On July 2, the Cartoon Network launched its Cartoon Network Mayors’ Awards of Excellence with the Metro Manila Mayor’s League.

"Inspired by our cartoon the Powerpuff Girls, we wanted to develop a community based project. And this is the significant thing about the Powerpuff Girls — they work with the mayor for the good of the community and they do all the work of saving the world before bedtime," said Ian Diamond, senior vice-president and general manager of Turner Entertainment Networks Asia, Inc.

Thus, the Mayors’ Awards was born.

Only the outstanding kids aged 10 to 16 will qualify for these awards, which will be given for leadership, athletics and the arts. "But what we want to make sure of is that the winners will not just win as individuals but that the field where they excel has some repercussion on the community as well," Diamond added.

"When we were kids, the only cartoon shows we saw were in the movies. There were no cartoons on TV," said Mayor Lito Atienza, president of the Metro Manila Mayors League at the launch of the awards. "Every child loves to watch cartoons. If you never watched cartoon shows then you were never a child."

Mayor Atienza says that his own grandchildren are normally glued to Cartoon Network whenever they are watching TV.

And Mayor Atienza is one lucky mayor because he appears with the Powerpuff Girls and the mayor of Townsville in the promo for these awards. "I am sure that my grandchildren are excited about seeing me on their favorite Cartoon Network," added Atienza.

He explained that when he was approached by Rene Nieva, president of Perceptions Inc., he knew that there could not be a more effective medium than Cartoon Network for such awards.

Of course, the fact that recognition would be given to kids all over Metro Manila was an offer he could not refuse. "Wherever their lives are taking them, whether in the filed of arts, athletics or leadership, they should be given recognition awards. These awards are both inspirational and developmental and they allow us to reach out to the kids of today," added Mayor Atienza.

Now that we have the Mayors’ Awards of Excellence, Mayor Ateinza is allexcited about these awards and encourages all his fellow mayors in theleague to get excited too. "I encourage my fellow mayors to get into these awards because I don’t want the city of Manila to run off with all theawards," Mayor Atienza jokingly told the mayor present.

But it is for the kids in the public school that mayor Atienza is rooting, hoping that these awards will also give them recognition that they deserve and encourage other youngsters to think of what they can do for their community.

So, how will the winners be chosen? The Cartoon Networks Mayors’ Awards of Excellence is open to Filipino boys and girls aged 10 to 16. The mayors of the Metro Manila municipalities will be asked to nominate 6 representatives (three boys and three girls) from their areas, chosen by a city council, out of all the entries submitted to their offices.

Nomination forms will be disseminated to various schools in Metro Manila through the office of the mayors. The forms will also be available at Toytown branches (Glorietta and Festival Supermall) and selected Jollibee stores (Global City at the Fort, Glorietta 4, Greenbelt, Park Square 1, Rockwell Powerplant, Ortigas, Roosevelt, Greenmeadows-Libis, SM Fairview, SM City 1, Festival Mall, Alabang Town Center, Greenhills, Robinsons Galleria, SM Megamall, Shangrila Plaza Mall and Pioneer St. Mandaluyong).

Deadline for submission of nominations to the mayors’ offices is Aug. 30.

Aside from winning the Mayors’ Awards of Excellence, the lucky winner will get a chance to star in a Powerpuff Girls episode.

"At then end of the day, what we want to do here is to inspire the youth to reach higher standards and to have a vision of community spirit — not unlike the girls who save the world before bedtime," says Diamond.
