Remember The Forgotten 10
MANILA, Philippines - Many things are disappearing because of rapid modernization and one of these things is Philippine heritage. Because of the decline, the Katutubong Filipino Project is launching a photo exhibit called “The Forgotten Ten,†an attempt to document what’s left of Philippine indigenous culture. The exhibit will feature the works of Jacob Maentz and aims to raise awareness and possibly support for the culture and traditions of indigenous groups in order to promote conservation. The exhibit will be held at the Waterdragon Gallery of the Yuchengco Museum, and will run from Aug. 30 to Sept. 13. Profits from the exhibit will be used for the ongoing projects of the Katutubong Filipino Project and to back the 4th National Indigenous Leaders Summit. It’s time for us to focus on who we really are, instead of who we’re trying to be.
Explore cutting-edge art at “el intruso/ entremetidoâ€
1335 Mabini is the toast of the Philippine art world. Established just recently by artists Arvin Flores and Manuel Ocampo, and gallerist Birgit Zimmermann as a hub for “cutting-edge contemporary art,†it is located in a pre-war mansion in Ermita built in 1901. Today, it is home to some of the most provoking pieces by renowned and upcoming artists. On Sept. 7, the gallery is exhibiting “el intruso/ entremetido,†a group show featuring the works of Poklong Anading, Roberto Bellini, Anna Katrina Beltran, Roberto Chabet, Maria Cruz, David Griggs, Nilo Ilarde, Robert Langenegger, Manuel Ocampo, Jayson Oliveria, Maria Taniguchi MM Yu, Jorgen Leth, with a collection of speakers and caps by Romeo Lee. As if the line-up isn’t impressive enough, the exhibit will also feature multimedia pieces using non-traditional materials in an unexpected manner. “El intruso/ entremetido†will run until Oct. 5.
Take Dance Lessons
Route 196 is going through a makeover. What is normally reserved for indie and rock music will now play host to a night of indie dance, electro, and EDM as Route 196 holds Dance Lessons tonight, with DJ sets from Jason Drilon, Niki Rojas, and Joey Santos. To complete the transformation, Route will turn the venue into a “club wasteland†with a banging sound system and lights to get everyone into the dance spirit. As an added treat, Joey will play some serious Carly Rae, which should get everyone thumping. Get some Dance Lessons tonight at 9 p.m. Entrance fee comes with a free beer and random shots.
Witness the rebirth of Philippine cinema with ‘On The Job’
This could possibly be Philippine cinema at its finest. After rumblings of a potential renaissance of local cinema, Erik Matti releases On The Job, a thrilling action film starring Piolo Pascual, Gerald Anderson, and Joel Torre. The film touches on the lives of contract killers and law agents as they struggle within a corrupt government system. The film premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival (with a two-minute standing ovation from the audience and positive reviews) and was screened at the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival in South Korea, where the film won the Jury Prize and Torre won Best Actor. The film has successfully premiered in local theaters, and will soon be shown in the US, Australia, and France. Word has it that Baltasar Kormákur, director of Contraband and 2 Guns, is directing a US remake that will be released worldwide. While we doubt that the remake will capture the essence of OTJ, we can only expect greater things from Filipino actors and directors. Now’s a great time for our film industry.

Have a Hotdog!
Wednesday nights at Aracama have become the day to go out and get smashed. This is when Hotdog takes over, and the cool kids commandeer the turntables and blast whatever’s on their playlists. Next Wednesday’s guest “DJs†are Supreme’s own David Milan, Preview’s Daryl Chang, and Mega’s Patrick Galang. Line hits 200 million users
In Tim Yap’s column last Saturday, entitled, “Different ways of coming together,†it was mentioned that popular messaging app Line had a user base of 150 million people. This was a mistake. Line has actually hit 200 million users, and counting. Looks like the app’s stickers are too cute to resist!
