12 lessons I learned from Lolo Benny

Donnie Tantoco - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - 1. There are no shortcuts to success. Hard work, perseverance, patience, and a positive attitude are essential. True success that lasts does not come easy. The fruits of your labor are so much sweeter when you have worked hard to attain them.

2. Never stop learning. Learning does not end when school ends. The whole world is a classroom from which you can learn many, many valuable lessons and every person you meet is a potential teacher.

3.Never compromise your values for short-term gain. No amount of money in the world can buy a good reputation and a clean conscience. Your values are the most important legacy that you will leave your children. They will learn how to become decent human beings from your example. Your reputation will follow you for your entire lifetime. You cannot buy a good reputation.

4. Your family will be your anchor during life’s many storms. Take care of your families. Be faithful and loving husbands and wives, responsible parents, and good role models to your children.

5. In whatever you do, big or small, work with passion and enthusiasm. There is no job that is too small. Mother Teresa of Calcutta said that she can do no great things, only small things with great love.

6. Be kind to all, especially those who cannot pay you back. Kindness is its own reward. The kindness you show will lift up many weary and tired souls. Be kind. It costs nothing but brings so much joy to others.

7. Try to find what you love to do then find a way to get paid for it. Don’t look for a job that pays a lot. Look for a job that you love, and the pay will follow.

8. Do not compare yourself to others. Compete only with yourself. Always stretch yourself and strive for a little more than what you think you can do.

9. Take care of your bodies. Try to stay physically fit. Your mental and emotional well-being will depend on your physical well-being. My grandfather is 93 years old, but he is still strong and mobile. He continues to travel around the world.

10. Do not try to change or control people. Accept them for what they are. The only one you should try to change and control is yourself.

11. Don’t let setbacks set you back. When bad things happen, learn from them and move on. Do not dwell on failures. Use them as stepping stones to success.

12. Put God at the center of all that you do. Pray in all circumstances. Pray when you are happy. Pray when you are sad. Pray when you are grateful. Pray when you are challenged. Pray when you wake up in the morning. Pray before you sleep at night. Do your best and let God take care of the rest.
