Few bands cross generational divides like they do streets, but the Apo Hiking Society has been around and back, and back, and back. 39 years in the industry are what Danny Javier, Boboy Garrovillo, and Jim Paredes have under their belts as Apo. And tonight at 8 p.m. at the Araneta Colliseum, they launch a year-long celebration towards their big 4-0.
From vinyls to cassette tapes to CDs to MP3s, their songs play everyday around the world. And tonight’s show, “Apo of the Philippines,” will show you just that: They’re the banda ng bayan for all kababayans. No matter how old you are.
26 chart-topping albums have produced more than the usual last song syndromes: Pumapatak ang Ulan, Awit Ng Barkada, Nakapagtataka, Ewan, Batang-batang Ka Pa, When I Met You, Anna, Blue Jeans, Panalangin, Bawat Bata, Saan Na Nga Ba’ng Barkada, and Tuyo Na’ng Damdamin. We bet one of these tunes is now lodged in your head.
But Supreme sources say Apo has an ace up their sleeves for tonight, too. During their concert, we hear the group will launch their 27th album “Jim, Danny and Boby... The APO.” This produced by The Thirdline, Inc. and the band themselves.
Now, Apo’s immense contributions to the local music industry have spawned two tribute albums, Kami nAPO Muna and Kami nAPO Ulit. Of this, Danny Paredes says, “I salute and respect the artistry of the bands that participated in that project.”
The respect is definitely two-way, though, as “Apo of the Philippines,” will exhibit. Expect to see many surprise musicians to tonight’s big concert. You’ll have to go and watch to know who these awesome acts are, though!
