Itchy, scratchy problem

ASK YOUR VET - Dr. Lydia Mangahas -
I have a Shih-Tzu who has ticks and fleas. We already brought him to two different vets and had him treated for the pests. Unfortunately, neither of them have been able to get rid of ticks and fleas totally. What should we do? What is the best medicine or shampoo for us to use? Is it OK if I shave off all his hair? Help, our dog is in bad shape.

Remedios R. Almin

Ticks and fleas would not be much of a problem anymore if you use Frontline spray. It is available in most veterinary clinics. It is hypoallergenic and may be used even for young puppies. To be effective, spray your dog on the neck, in the breast, in the armpit area, the back, the paws, and the face. Cover the eyes when spraying. If there are parasites found inside the ears, wet a piece of cotton with the spray and wipe the insides of the ears. It is best to spray when the dog has not been bathed for several days. After spraying, you will see ticks and fleas falling off from the dog’s body, and dying in a moment.

Bathe the dog five days after spraying. Spray again after five days, if you still detect the presence of ticks and fleas. The spray protects the dog from fleas and ticks. These parasites suck blood from the animal host and with Frontline protection, they fall off and die.

It is good to deworm your dog.
Dog Got No Appetite
What could be wrong with my 6-month-old Siberian Husky? We had him dewormed but he still has no appetite. I give him Eukanuba with bananas and a calcium supplement. But I notice that he still he has a lot of leftovers as compared to before when he used to eat everything we gave him. What supplements should I give him to increase his appetite? Can I give him beef pro? what about Alpo?

Supplement what your pet eats with vitamins like Pet tabs, In Enzyme Alkacel, which helps hydrolize the major NSP in grains, nuts and other food of vegetable origin. It helps release the trapped energy and protein. This is being distributed by MeiRu Corporation.

You might also want to try another brand of food. Science Diet or Top Dog for puppies might be good.
Where Oh Where Has My Kitty Gone
My kitten and her sister kitten went up to the roof for a walk. The sister kitten returned after a while but my kitten did not. It is very unusual for her not to come home because she never goes farther than our roof. I am truly devastated and heart-broken with her loss. Now, what I’d like to know is, aside from any other reasons (like being stolen or caught in accident), is there any other possible, and more consoling reason for her coming back? Is it possible that she is on heat and this why she hasn’t returned? She’s around ten months old. Also, she has no reason to run away because she is very much loved and pampered. In your experience and expertise, when cats as young as her get lost, do they ever find their way home? I am so worried and miss her so much. I just want to stop worrying about her. Thank you.

Hannah

It is real tragedy to lose someone you love and care for but things happen for a reason. You say that you have taken care of your cats well, thus they have grown healthy and cute. For all you know, someone must have taken a fancy for your cat, snatched it, brought it home, and caged it. Perhaps someone else is happy now because of your cat.

It is possible as well that your cat might have found a mate. You say she is in heat and this will last for a few days. The heat will end soon and your cat may decide to return home in time.

Let us just hope that your great loss has become somebody else’s great gain. Let us just hope that a person as loving as you now has given your cat home and hearth. There are a lot of cats that are as beautiful and you may consider focusing your attention on them. Don’t despair, and don’t stop loving pets.
