A taste of Malaysia

Century Park Hotel’s Cafe in the Park was the site of one of the most successful food festivals in the city. "A Taste of Sarawak," a two-week gastronomic fiesta gathered diplomats and tourism officials at its opening for an afternoon of exotic dishes, traditional Malaysian music and ethnic dances.
At the inauguration of the festival were Century park Hotel general manager Paul Gill, joined by his Malaysian wife Connie. An arched entrance of nipa, orchids, and birds of paradise welcomes guests to a tropical themed cafe with tasty Sarawak dishes laid out on beautifully decorated buffet tables.
A highlight of the event was the performance of the Sarawak Cultural Village group, who gracefully interpreted dances from different Malaysian tribes. Colorful traditional costumes with clinking silver accents, feather headdresses and rich fabrics with intricate beadwork captured the interest of patrons while tasting the unique food.
The renowned Kuching Hilton chefs Dunssy Anak Ringkai and Abdullah Bin Raduan were flown from Malaysia for this event. The chefs said that they brought with them loads of spices and fresh ingredients to make genuine Malaysian fare.
Most of the delicious preparations were made with coconut milk, such as the pungent Daging Rendang, Sarawak Laksa, Pandan Gelatin and other desserts. The all-time favorite beef and chicken satay was served with creamy peanut sauce that was both sweet and spicy. The chicken in bamboo had the tangy taste of ginger and bay leaves while veggie lovers praised healthful servings of hot sautéed kangkung. There were more salads, main entrees and sinful desserts.
The Rizal Ballroom of the Makati Shangri-La became a melting pot of cultures as VIPs of many races and colors graced the Consular Corps of the Philippines’ 27th Annual Ball.
Leading to the ballroom, I was met by soft, soothing music by s string quartet. I knew it was going to be a special night, which was why I felt fortunate to be the evening’s master of ceremonies. Outgoing Dean and British Embassy Consul Ian Sargeant welcomed guests in his speech. Incoming Dean and Ukraine Consul General Oscar de Venecia in turn presented the outgoing dean with a plaque of recognition for successfully carrying out his term.
A sumptuous dinner followed with music provided by the League of Cayuks led by violinist Jay Cayuka. Some lucky attendees received airline tickets to various European, Asian and US destinations in a raffle that followed. Guests later took to the dance floor.
