Samsung Galaxy Tab S: Light, slim & bright

MANILA, Philippines - It would be foolhardy, expensive, frustrating and futile to keep up and acquire the latest gadgets whenever something new is introduced to the market. Like Sisyphus toiling to roll a boulder to the top of the hill, there is a sense of accomplishment when you are able to get the device you are lusting for. But this quickly turns into dismay when something new and something better shows up. Because a move towards improvement, technological advancement and sleek definitive design is the only direction that technological devices can take, a good rule of thumb is to invest in something that works best for your needs. Never mind exclusive software perks or the massive memory that can store numerous applications.  If you don’t need it, it will all be the same. And never mind keeping up to be fashionable, you’ll end up looking like a dimwit if you can’t operate your own device. Sometimes, however, one is fortunate to find something both you and the tech geek are looking for and can agree upon. And after seeing it perform, I am just about ready to take the plunge and invest on a new Galaxy Tab S by Samsung.

Galaxy Tab S is by far the slimmest and lightest tablet by Samsung — an advantage for people like myself who like to lug everything around in a big handbag. At a mere 467g for the 10.5 inch model and 298g for the 8.4 inch model, the device might actually be lighter than the medicine kit filled with pills and assorted sprays that I carry around for peace of mind in this season of asthma. The device is nice, thin and sleek, with a lot of memory that should allow even the most fanatical bookworms to tote a whole library’s worth of books.

At the recent launch in SM Megamall Fashion Hall, we were apprised of the fact that the device stands out because of its razor-sharp images that can be enjoyed even when one is outdoors. “Even in bright sunlight, the tablet’s advanced outdoor visibility technology makes on-screen content look bright, natural, and easy to view.” That means no more squinting while trying to discern what is on the screen.

“The Galaxy Tab S embodies the next evolution in mobile display technology, delivering a wider range of rich and crisp colors that are more true-to-life. Its industry-leading WQXGA (2560x1600, 16:10) Super AMOLED display meets more than 90 percent of Adobe RGB color coverage — able to express variety of colors than ever before — and has a remarkable 100,000:1 contrast ratio, providing deeper and more realistic images by making blacks darker and whites brighter.” What this all means to me is that movie-viewing will be more enjoyable and my tech-savvy cat Slinky will enjoy chasing the random dots on the screen while playing his favorite Game for Cats.

Of course, taking pictures should be easy. For those of us who rue the small displays in the usual cameras, pre-set professional modes and AMOLED Photo lets users manually adjust the display settings for bright, dynamic results for photo content. (AMOLED Cinema enhances videos.)

Other plus-points for the Galaxy Tab S are its enhanced productivity and security features that provide users with the ability to effortlessly and safely multitask. Users can make and receive calls directly from their phone to their Galaxy Tab S, anywhere at home, no matter where their phone is with the Call Forwarding feature; a Multi-User Mode that enables users to create their own personal optimized profile, accessing safely and conveniently with Fingerprint Scanner; and Quick Connect, which quickly finds and connects to nearby devices, for easy content sharing.

Hands down, however, the biggest attraction of a Samsung Galaxy Tab S would still be providing images with beautiful resolution. For those like me who need to surf the Internet to be able to fall asleep, the lightness of the device is a big advantage. It can be quite painful and annoying when one dozes off and the heavy device you are holding bonks you awake.
