UPTOWN DOWNTOWN - Joanne Zapanta-Andrada -

Dresses are, for many women, the quintessential fashion expression of femininity. How does one make sure that a dress is worn at its best? Designer (and St. Benilde fashion educator) John Guarnes shares these tips.

1. When buying dresses off-the-rack, make sure that the dress fits you very well. If you should insist on buying a garment that is not a perfect fit, opt for one that is slightly too loose rather than one that is in the tight side. It is much easier for a mananahi to let in a dress than to have it let out.

2. Check for care instructions. Are you really willing to dry clean? Is the fabric sensitive to certain detergents?

3. Be aware that dress sizes differ. An American size 6 is equal to British size 10 and European size 40. Even when comparing clothes that originate from the same country, sizes may differ from brand to brand.

4. Purchase dresses that highlight your best features. Short dresses are fine when you have beautiful legs. Cinched waist dresses work best for women with hourglass figures. Sabrina-cut necklines work well on women with long, slender necks.

5. The advantage of having made-to-order clothes is that you are assured that the garment will fit you well. Do take time out to attend fittings. Communicate with your couturier (or modista) if a particular area does not conform properly. Make use of a designer’s expertise when collaborating on clothes design and material. Do not, however, allow a designer to bludgeon you into agreeing to a cut or fabric that you are not really happy with. Remember, you are the client and this entitles you to have the last say.
