Get back in shape after the holidays

BETWEEN YOU & ME - BETWEEN YOU & ME By Jacquilou Blanco -
It’s so nice to eat during the Christmas season. Queso de bola, jamon, ensaymada, castañas, puto-bungbong, bibingka and all the goodies we receive as Christmas gifts. However, if we do not control ourselves and stop working out, we may easily gain a couple of pounds.

Because of the vacation from school and work, most also take a break from their exercise regimen and use the holidays as an excuse to eat more than they usually do.

It’s definitely okay to enjoy the season, attend Christmas parties and eat goodies, but everything in moderation. Eat in moderation, drink in moderation. Be consistent with your workout. If you are busy, you can divide your workout into two: A 15-minute cardiovascular activity in the morning and another 15 minutes in the afternoon or evening. It may be a jog, a walk, getting on a treadmill or a bike. The choice is yours. It just takes a little planning and discipline.

However if you put on a bit of weight, here are some suggestions to help you get back on track.

• Drink lots of water.

•Lessen your intake of coffee, soft drinks and alcohol.

• Get back to your exercise regimen.

• A spin class is something you might want to try. Some gyms like Golds Gym and Bodyworx at West Avenue offer this. You burn a lot of calories here.

• If you know how to skip rope, that’s great!

• Try attending a kick boxing class or a punch-bag aerobics class or Muaythai which I have been learning for the past two months. These are great explosive workouts.

• Lessen your salt intake.

• If you have indulged in sweets this season, cut back on them and have fresh fruits instead.

• Eat more fish, chicken and salads.

• If you have been sleeping late, catch up on your sleep. If our body gets the rest it needs, then you will have your energy to work out.

• Always keep in mind that your physical activities should be more than your food intake and not the other way around. And like I always say, eat in moderation and be consistent in your workouts.

Enjoy the holidays without letting yourself go. Happy, happy New Year!
