Promoting good sleep by investing in a quality mattress with Tempur

MANILA, Philippines — What qualifies as good sleep? Is getting eight hours of shut-eye enough? What if you slept eight hours but woke up several times in the middle of the night? Upon waking, did you really feel restored, or at the very least, awake?
At a recent event dubbed “The Private Hour” by Tempur Philippines, guest speaker Dr. Angelika Doreen Martinez Balite, MD, FPSO-HNS, helped define what qualifies as good sleep.
“What consists of good sleep? First, it should be adequate, meaning it has to be around seven to nine hours every night,” Dr. Balite said. “Yes, that’s around one-third of our day.”
“And then number two, it has to be continuous. When we say continuous, there should be no disturbances... And when you wake up, it has to be restorative—meaning you have to feel energized, not tired or sleepy.”
Dr. Balite’s talk was part of the discussion that Tempur opened at the intimate gathering attended by business leaders, key opinion leaders and close friends. Held at a private showroom in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig last September 24, The Private Hour was also co-hosted by Edgar Allan Caper, founder, president, and CEO of Caper Group.
According to Tempur, “peak performance begins with quality recovery.” The goal was to allow guests to pause and reflect on the importance of sleep in sustaining the physical, mental and emotional demands of executive life.
Caper was the perfect example. As a CEO, he shared his personal experience navigating a demanding professional life and how prioritizing better sleep with Tempur has influenced the way he approaches each day, from his energy and focus to his overall sense of well-being.
His story brought a personal perspective to the larger conversation: when your days are filled with decisions that affect others, being at your best is not simply a personal advantage. It is part of responsible leadership.
“We invest so much in our businesses, our teams, and our plans. I am learning to give the same consideration to my own rest," Caper shared. "Thank you, Tempur Philippines, for encouraging a conversation about investing in good sleep and taking recovery seriously.”
Dr. Balite echoed this, noting, “For people making high-stakes decisions every day, consistent, uninterrupted sleep is one of the most practical investments they can make in their performance and long-term health."
She further emphasized, “Sleep is not downtime. It is when the brain and body do their most important repair work.”

The conversation then moved from experience to science as Tempur Philippines showcased the technology behind its sleep solutions: the Tempur Material, a unique pressure-relieving material developed from technology originally created through NASA research to cushion astronauts during spaceflight.
The material's ability to conform to the body provides personalized support and pressure relief, demonstrating how advanced sleep technology can transform the quality of nightly recovery.
According to Dr. Balite, Tempur beds address the key criteria needed when choosing a bed that promotes good sleep.
“I want you to remember just three things through the acronym B-C-D: B, it has to be breathable; C, it has to conform to your body; and D, it has to distribute pressure throughout your body,” the doctor noted.
Finally, Tempur showcased its most advanced cooling and breathable luxury mattress yet: the all-new Tempur Pro Air™ Luxe. Engineered for enhanced breathability, the mattress delivers up to 10 times more airflow and helps keep sleepers up to 2°C cooler throughout the night by continuously moving heat away from the body.
Guests discovered how the breathable material works in combination with Tempur's signature pressure-relieving material to provide a cooler, supportive sleep environment, helping transform nightly rest into a more restorative recovery.
"Our guests tonight carry a great deal of responsibility, and they know the value of investing in what helps them perform. Tempur has always been built on the belief that better sleep leads to better days," said Stephen Sy, founder and president of Focus Global Inc., which distributes Tempur in the Philippines.
Through “The Private Hour,” Tempur Philippines reinforced its belief that sleep is more than a nightly routine—it is an essential part of sustaining performance, resilience and well-being. — EUDEN VALDEZ
