Pangilinan, De Lima named Liberal Party leaders

MANILA, Philippines — The Liberal Party has elected Mamamayang Liberal party-list Rep. Leila de Lima as its chairperson and lawyer Erin Tañada as president, as the country’s second-oldest political party signaled an early start to preparations for the 2028 elections.

New Liberal Party chairman emeritus Sen. Francis Pangilinan said the leadership changes were made on Saturday, during a party assembly to mark their 80th anniversary at the Bantayog ng mga Bayani.

Apart from De Lima and Tañada, Rep. Krisel Lagman was elected executive vice president, Rep. PA Umali as treasurer and lawyer Kit Belmonte as secretary-general.

In a message responding to a question from the Liberal Youth, Pangilinan said the party intends to unite with other democratic forces, as it looks toward the next electoral cycle, despite what he described as a turbulent political environment.

“In the midst of the biggest corruption scandal in the history of our republic, by joining forces with the widest range of people, the 2028 elections – much like the 2025 elections and even more so – is ours,” Pangilinan said in Filipino.

He added that the party’s eight-decade history shows its ability to endure by adapting to the challenges of different periods.

“Our history has proven that we do not succumb to the challenges of the times,” he said.

De Lima, who spent nearly seven years in detention under the Duterte administration before her release, called for discipline in political work, including legislation, oversight and accountability in Congress.

She said this should be done in cooperation with district and party-list groups advocating for marginalized sectors such as the urban poor, indigenous peoples and the LGBTIA+ community.

Tañada said preparations for the 2028 elections must begin early and be carried out systematically, stressing the need for leadership that listens, builds linkages and acts consistently.

Belmonte urged party members to recognize the responsibilities ahead, saying political engagement goes beyond public displays of activism.

“This is not just about attending rallies, blogging or showbiz, it’s a true responsibility. We involve ourselves in history alongside the people. Shaping history, so that true democracy will prevail,” he said in Filipino.

Belmonte said the coming months would include activities such as the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the EDSA people power uprising, adding that party members should not relent until tangible improvements are felt in the lives of Filipinos.

Allies who attended the anniversary gathering included Akbayan Reps. Chel Diokno and Perci Cendaña, Kamanggagawa Rep. Eli San Fernando, Gabriela Rep. Sarah Elago and ACT Teachers Rep. Antonio Tinio.

Kiko Dee, nephew of the late president Benigno Aquino III, was also present.
