White beep cards for students now available

MANILA, Philippines — Students may now apply for beep cards that will enable them to automatically avail of a 50 percent fare discount on the LRT-1, LRT-2 and MRT-3.
President Marcos yesterday led the launch of the white beep cards for students as part of the government’s efforts to provide accessible modes of transportation.
“This is a huge help because students are on a very, very tight budget. So, we are very happy to be able to launch this new system to give the beep card to our students,” Marcos said at the LRT-2 Legarda Station in Manila.
“We look forward to the advantages it will bring to our students, our young people, our most important asset,” he added.
The government launched the same fare discount for senior citizens and persons with disability (PWD) last July.
According to the Transportation department, the on-the-spot printing of white beep cards for students, senior citizens and PWDs started yesterday morning.
Applicants may go to any LRT or MRT station and present requirements such as student ID, enrollment certificate, senior citizen ID or PWD ID. A one-time payment of P30 will be charged for the beep cards.
The processing of beep cards has been hastened to three minutes, a far cry from the seven to 10 days it used to take. The cards may also be loaded through mobile payment services, eliminating the need to return to the train stations for a top up.
Marcos vowed to continue modernizing the country’s transport system to ensure the convenience of commuters.
“We will watch and see what else we can do,” the President said.
