SWS: Majority of Filipinos back current term limit for president

MANILA, Philippines — A new survey conducted by private pollster Social Weather Stations revealed that 75% of Filipinos support the current single six-year term limit imposed by the Constitution on presidents.
The poll conducted from June 23 to 26 found that 57% strongly agree with the term limit while 18% somewhat agree with it. Only a total of 11% disagree with the present term limit.
SWS said this results in a net agreement score of +64, which it classifies as “very strong.”
Among those who disagreed with the current setup, SWS said, they proposed an average of 7.1 years for each term and an average of 2.1 terms.
The pollster added that net support for the current term limit was “very strong” in all areas and across educational levels.
Net support was also “very strong” for the present term limit regardless of people’s opinions on President Rodrigo Duterte’s planned vice-presidential bid, which 60% of Filipinos believe goes against the Constitution, according to a separate SWS poll.
Those who were dissatisfied with Duterte also had the highest support for the constitutional term limit, SWS said. — Xave Gregorio
