NDRRMC : Yolanda deaths now at 5,982

MANILA, Philippines - The death toll from super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) has increased to 5,982, the National Disaster Risk Reducation and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported Thursday.
 
The NDRRMC said the number of injured persons was still at 27,022 and the missing remains at 1,779.
 
The agency also reported that over 2.5 million families or 12 million individuals were affected by Yolanda in over 12,000 barangays in 44 provinces, 591 municipalities and 57 cities of Regions 4-A, 4-B, 5, 6, ,7 , 8, 10, 11 and Caraga.
 
Of the total affected, almost four million persons were displaced.
 
The number of houses damaged by the powerful storm was 1.1 million with over 593,000 totally destroyed, the NDRRMC said.
 
The estimated damage from the typhoon remains at P35.5 billion (P18.2 billion for infrastructure and P17.3 billion for agriculture).
 
Over P1 billion worth of aid had been given to the affected population, with more than 35,000 local and foreign relief workers lending a hand, the NDRRMC said.
