Las Las Piñas choir tops Austria tilt
MANILA, Philippines – The popular Las Piñas Boys’ Choir has achieved international acclaim after being declared champion at the recently concluded World Choir Games in Graz, Austria.
In addition to the gold medal the 20-member boys’ choir won in the Children’s Category, the group was also awarded a silver medal in the Musica Sacra (sacred music) Category in the 5th World Choir Games last July 12.
Held every two years in different countries, the World Choir Games is the largest international choir competition.
In the singing competition, the talented boys of Las Piñas, aged nine to 16, bested 70 other choirs from all over the world including those from the United States, Greece, Estonia, Great Britain, Russia, and South Africa.
Senate President Manny Villar filed Senate Resolution No. 507 commending the Las Piñas Boys’ Choir for winning in the two categories in the World Choir Games.
The Las Piñas Boys Choir was founded in 1969 by Rev. Fr. Leo Reinier, CICM, assistant parish priest in St. Joseph, who believed that the bamboo organ could achieve fullness as an instrument to praise God only when there is a good choir to put into words what the music conveys.
He recruited young boys with potentially good singing voices from the parochial as well as public schools in Las Piñas.
Current choir members are all scholars at St. Joseph’s Academy.
