Fyang Smith and JM Ibarra talk reel-to-real chemistry

MANILA, Philippines — Fyang Smith and JM Ibarra first captured the hearts of the audiences with their strong chemistry and genuine bond inside the “Pinoy Big Brother” house during the “Gen 11” edition of the show. Their newly minted loveteam gained a cult following. But what’s the real score between the two?
Fyang and JM expressed at the recent “Star Magic Spotlight” press conference held at the Coffee Project, Wil Tower, Quezon City that they respect and value each other.
“Our focus right now is our career, work. As long as may pagpapahalaga, we have respect for each other. That’s all that matters to us for now,” stated JM.
Fyang echoed what JM said and added that they feel contented whenever they are together.

Teased about other suitors of Fyang, JM interjected, “Yun ay kung makakasingit.” Fyang then reacted, “Wala ng makakasingit. Bawal.”
Now that their careers have taken off following their “PBB” stint, the newbie actors are inspired to carve their own names in the entertainment business.
JM and Fyang made a special cameo appearance in Kim Chiu and Paulo Avelino’s romantic comedy movie, “My Love Will Make You Disappear.” They also lent their voice to the Tagalog-dubbed version of the 2024 South Korean drama film “Picnic,” produced by Lotte Entertainment and brought to local audiences by Nathan Studio, which will premiere in cinemas nationwide next month.

In an exclusive interview with The STAR, the onscreen partners sat next to each other and gave out “kilig”-inducing answers. They had obvious affection for each other — Fyang was touchy with JM, showing their comfortability, as they bantered during the chat.
Did you guys expect that your loveteam will become a hit after “PBB?”
Fyang: “Personally, no. Because inside the ‘PBB’ house, we had a conflict, tampuhan. It’s really different when you’re inside the house.”
JM: “Both of us didn’t expect that our fandom would be this huge.”

What’s your first impression of each other?
Fyang: “He told me I’m pretty.”
JM: “She’s quiet. Kind.”
Fyang: “Tama yung mabait but quiet; it depends on the mood. My first impression of him is matikas siya. As a probinsyana girl from Laguna, that’s our (local) term. I told him he’s matikas (and) nonchalant. He’s not moody. But when we got out of the (‘PBB’) house, masungit pa sa akin.”
What’s your impression of each other now?
JM: “She’s really kind. What other people saw na pagka-masungit, it’s untrue. She is very down-to-earth.”
Fyang: “Same thing. Hindi pala siya matikas. Soft boy pala siya. As in super soft, soft, soft. But yung mood niya, dun lang talaga nagkaka-problema. ‘Pag masungit ako, mas masungit talaga siya.”
What’s the strength of your loveteam?
JM: “I think it’s being genuine and our authenticity.”
Who are your pegs as a loveteam?
JM: “Not really the (same) path but since I was younger, I’ve been watching KathNiel.”
Fyang: “Hindi yung kung saan sila nagtapos but we just want the way how they represented themselves. It’s really genuine.”
What are the qualities that you like about one another?
JM: “Everything. She’s family-oriented, she takes care of her sibling, she values her friends, and she takes care of me. Haha!”
Fyang: “I like the way he protects me. The way he guides me and corrects me if I’ve done something wrong. He’s super family-oriented. I’ve become his niece’s favorite. He’s also down-to-earth and super hardworking. Gusto niya every day, may gawa siya. Kaya niyang wala pahinga.”
JM: “Siya na yung pahinga ko.”
What’s the sweetest thing you did for each other?
JM: “I think our date on Feb. 14. Simula ‘bahay ni kuya,’ nakakailang date na kami but it took on a different meaning when we had it on Valentine’s Day. That was very memorable for me and (the) sweetest.”
Fyang: “Same. And it was the first time that I experienced na may nag-aya mismo sa akin on Feb. 14. It was the first time that I had that setup, there (was) a band, flowers, pa-steak. It was the best. Please do it again.”
Is there a chance for you to court Fyang?
JM: “Yes. I’ve been very vocal about it.”
Will you give JM a chance if ever he will court you?
Fyang: “Yes, of course. Siyempre, darating din naman talaga sa point na yun. But for now, we want to focus on our career. We love working together, mapa-solo man or together.”
