MANILA, Philippines - Milo Sogueco’s first full-length film, Sanglaan (The Pawnshop) is the latest Filipino film to win honors in an international film festival.

The indie received two awards at the 15th Lyon Film Festival held last Nov. 3 to 8 in France.

The film, which topbills Tessie Tomas (far right) and Ina Feleo won silver in the New Asian Cinema and the bronze Grand Prix du Public audience award.

Sogueco and producer Gay Ace Domingo were present to receive the awards.

Sanglaan was an official entry in this year’s Cinemalaya film festival. It won the Best Actress award for Ina and the Best Supporting Actress trophy for Tessie during awards rites at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

Sanglaan tells the story of people who run a pawnshop and those who patronize it. The film is represented by Ferdinand Lapuz’s Ignatius Films Canada.    — Maridol Rañoa-Bismark
