British Chamber hosts cybersecurity event, strongly supports passage of cybersecurity act

On March 20, 2024, the British Chamber of Commerce Philippines hosted its third run of the Trade & Connect series titled, “Securing the Digital Frontier: Breaking Through Digital Boundaries” at Makati Commerce Tower. The event emphasized on the Philippine government’s cybersecurity infrastructure, policy developments, and insights from the private sector. 

In partnership with CyberQ Group, Colliers, and Makati Commerce Tower, it facilitated discussions between the government and the private sector. It featured industry experts including Director Engr. Jose Carlos P. Reyes from the Cybersecurity Bureau of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), Chris Woods, Founder and CEO, Roberto Tayag, CEO-APAC, & Vishvas Nayi, Chief Solutions Architect of the CyberQ Group, and Pat Pio Fondevilla, Cybersecurity Operations Head of the Philippine National Bank.

BCCP Executive Director/Trustee Chris Nelson reiterated the importance of President Marcos cybersecurity priority bills such as Cybersecurity Act, Anti-Mule Act, and the Online Site Blocking Act. It also expressed its support for the government’s policy initiatives and programs that welcome opportunities for collaboration with the UK’s expertise in cybersecurity. 

“Cybersecurity is a very critical point. We, at the British Chamber, fully endorse how important that is, and in that context, we continue to support the government to pass as we mentioned the three acts, particularly Anti-Mule Act, Online Site Blocking Act and Cybersecurity Act along with supporting the [on-going] educational initiatives.”

In his presentation, Director Reyes noted the recently approved National Cybersecurity Plan (2024-2029) which aims to further improve the Philippine cybersecurity posture to better identify threats through comprehensive measures, strategies, and incident response plan. He also cited the collaborative efforts between the Philippines and the UK government:

“We have a program right now with the UK government. We just concluded our program on the Critical National Infrastructure Risk Assessment seminar. It’s a 5 day event we conducted through the efforts of the UK embassy.”

The CyberQ Group, a renowned UK cybersecurity company, highlighted partnership opportunities amidst growing risk of cyber attacks worldwide– with Manila having the biggest capability and workforce. It also called upon its objective to narrow the skill gap in the Philippines by providing training and seminars in collaboration with the Commission on Higher Education and other relevant agencies to develop cybersecurity Filipino talents both in the Philippines and abroad.
