This year, we have witnessed numerous pivotal moments and milestones across various industries and sectors, as global economies navigated the challenges of the new normal.

Many businesses focused on revival and steady stabilization, with the construction industry emerging as a standout performer as infrastructure development gained momentum due to the rapid economic recovery efforts of our government and the support of the private sector.

Infrastructure development stands out as a focal point for the Marcos administration, with an ambitious target of allocating a five to six percent growth of the gross domestic product (GDP) annually to this critical sector. Recent data reveals a commendable surge in infrastructure spending, registering a notable 7.8 percent increase to reach P507.2 billion in the first half of this year. Impressively, reports say that this translates to a substantial 5.3 percent of the GDP for the same period.

Insights from Nomura Global Markets Research suggest a promising trajectory for Philippine infrastructure development in the foreseeable future, driven by an upswing in public-private partnership (PPP) projects. Nomura emphasizes that governments placing a paramount emphasis on infrastructure and adopting strategic project execution approaches have witnessed remarkable advancements.

A significant milestone occurred in March, when President Marcos‘ government greenlit a total of 194 flagship infrastructure projects valued at an impressive P8.2 trillion.

Notably, P2.5 trillion of the substantial sum is earmarked to be financed through PPPs, reflecting a robust commitment to leveraging private sector support and collaboration for national development.

This strategic push towards infrastructure development not only underscores the government’s dedication to enhancing the country’s economic landscape but, also aligns with global trends where prioritizing and strategically executing infrastructure projects have proven to be catalysts for substantial progress.

Among the country’s significant contributors to the construction industry’s robust recovery was Meralco Industrial Engineering Services Corp. (MIESCOR), the foremost engineering and construction firm in the country, which celebrated its golden anniversary this year. This milestone not only signifies a remarkable achievement for the company, but also holds great significance for the field of Filipino engineering.

Reflecting on MIESCOR’s rich 50-year history, I take pride as a Filipino in witnessing its evolution since its incorporation in 1973. MIESCOR has transformed into a premier company, continually enhancing its services from engineering, procurement, and construction to logistics, facilities management, and most recently, its foray into the telecommunications sector.

The reach of MIESCOR’s impact extends beyond Metro Manila, exemplified by recent projects, such as energizing transmission lines in Zambales and Batangas, contributing to a more reliable power supply for Filipinos in these regions.

As a subsidiary of Meralco, MIESCOR has played a pivotal role in the sustained success of the distribution utility by delivering exceptional engineering design and technical services critical to its operations.

The 50th anniversary celebration underscores MIESCOR’s unmatched excellence in engineering and the dedication of its exemplary workforce over the years. Notably, the Philippine Contractors Accreditation Board consistently classifies MIESCOR as “AAAA,” the highest category in general engineering, building, and specialty electrical, mechanical, and communication facilities contracting. Additionally, the company has retained certifications from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), including ISO 9001:2015 for Quality Management System.

Committed to engineering excellence and customer value, MIESCOR has expanded its footprint with three subsidiaries – MIESCOR Builders Inc. (MBI), Miescor Logistics Inc. (MLI), and the recently established Miescor Infrastructure Development Corporation (MIDC) in 2021. Leveraging MIESCOR’s expertise, both MBI and MLI have earned a Category AA license from PCAB.

Beyond its impressive achievements, MIESCOR has been a professional haven for the country’s top technical professionals, offering numerous career opportunities in the construction industry. The company’s success stories extend to its collaborations in the energy, telecommunications, and manufacturing sectors, showcasing its vast national infrastructure network and a deep bench of engineering talent.

Looking ahead, as MIESCOR embarks on the next era, there is no doubt that it will continue to elevate Filipino engineering, bringing pride to Meralco, its 10,000-strong workforce, and the entire nation.
