AIA, Medicard name new CEO

MANILA, Philippines — Life insurance firm AIA Philippines and MediCard Philippines Inc. have named a new chief executive officer to handle the leading health maintenance organization (HMO) in the country.

AIA and Medicard said Julian Mengual will serve as the HMO’s new CEO. He will replace Nicky Montoya.

Mengual has been MediCard’s deputy chief executive officer since March this year when AIA formally concluded its acquisition of the HMO.

Mengual is bringing with him 25 years of knowledge and experience in the healthcare and financial industries.

Before Medicard, Mengual served as the CEO for Asia Health Markets and Regional Health Solutions Asia Pacific of Cigna Hong Kong, a subsidiary of the US-based healthcare and insurance firm.

He managed Cigna’s operations in Hong Kong, Thailand, Indonesia, and Australia.

AIA Philippines CEO Kelvin Ang lauded Montoya’s contributions to MediCard, noting that the former head brought the HMO to where it is today.

“We look forward to working with Julian Mengual as we continue to make healthcare more accessible, affordable, and effective in the Philippines,” Ang said.

It was in September last year when global insurance giant and parent firm AIA Group Ltd. acquired 100 percent of MediCard Philippines.

Currently, MediCard has an extensive medical service network of over 1,000 partner hospitals and clinics, and 26 high-quality MediCard-owned clinics located in key cities across the Philippines.

These offer a broad suite of services across primary care, diagnostics, laboratory tests and minor surgeries.
