The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Shanghai Airport (Group) Co. Limited and FedEx Express (FedEx), one of the world’s largest express transportation companies, announced plans to establish the FedEx Shanghai International Express and Cargo Hub at Shanghai Pudong International Airport.

FedEx will invest more than $100 million on this project, which will be one of the important facilities in Asia Pacific Region for FedEx.  It will provide greater access and convenience from East China to Europe and the US.  Both parties will also collaborate in the areas of talent training and operations efficiency improvement.

Jing Yiming, vice president of Shanghai Airport Group, and Eddy Chan, head of China and senior vice president of FedEx Express, signed the agreement on behalf of each party.

The new FedEx facility is expected to meet the company’s requirements for 20 years and beyond.  Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG Airport) is one of the company’s preferred locations for future global routing and network planning in China.

Based upon the current weekly 68 flight frequencies at PVG Airport and to meet growing business needs, FedEx will gradually expand its flight frequencies and cargo turnover at PVG Airport.  FedEx will also proactively assess the feasibility of carrying out transit shipments in PVG Airport.

The project will also support the airport in further optimizing its flight network and increasing its international cargo turnover, and will promote it as the important international gateway in China and the international air cargo transportation center in the Asia Pacific Region.

The 134,000-square-meter Shanghai Hub will be the largest of its kind at Pudong International Airport.  It will have the capacity to handle up to 36,000 parcels and documents per hour and is expected to begin operations in 2017.

The new facility will employ environmental-friendly designs with an automated sort system.  A new system will be developed with China Customs and China Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine (CIQ) to achieve paperless customs clearance.  The new facility’s annual sort capability is expected to reach more than 90 million parcels and documents.
