Globe connects Cebu schools to WiMax service

-

MANILA, Philippines - As part of its vision to be the leader in information and communications technology (ICT) for education, Globe Telecom is connecting six new elementary schools in Cebu City to WiMax, its high-speed mobile broadband Internet, through its Internet in Schools Program (ISP).

The schools to be connected to Globe WiMax are Banilad Elementary School, Barrio Luz Elementary School, City Central Elementary School, Kamputhaw Elementary School, Lahug Elementary School and Zapatera Elementary School, all located in Cebu City.

With the high-speed Internet connection of WiMax, students and teachers will have easy access to a wide range of information useful in enhancing the learning process.

ISP is one of Globe’s major education initiatives utilizing Globe Broadband to provide free Internet for one year to applicable public schools all over the country. Through the program, Globe continues to prepare young Filipinos to be globally competitive by introducing them to Internet literacy skills and opening doors to a wide range of information available on the Internet. ISP is also one of the programs spearheaded by Globe in response to the nationwide program, Gearing Up Internet Literacy & Access for Students (GILAS).

Globe ISP has utilized the latest in broadband technology such as WiMax (Wireless Inter-Operability for Microwave Access) for use in the classrooms.

WiMax, the newest and cutting-edge wireless broadband technology offering by Globe, has improved reach versus other wireless technologies as it covers greater distances and is 33 percent faster and 25 percent more affordable than other broadband providers. Through WiMax’s larger coverage and higher bandwidth performance, Internet has now become available to previously unserviceable areas.

The Globe WIMax network is the first and largest mobile WIMax network in Southeast Asia to date. Globe WiMax now covers more than a hundred key broadband markets nationwide and continues to get rapid subscriber take up. In addition, WIMax has consistently high satisfaction rating among subscribers and is currently the most stable and reliable wireless broadband technology commercially available today, company officials said.   — Mary Ann Ll.
